What are Baptisms and Dedications?

Infant/Child Dedications
Kaw Prairie is blessed to be the church home to people from a wide array of traditions and backgrounds, and so is happy to also offer infant/child dedications for families who prefer to wait for their child to be baptized when they can knowingly make that choice for themselves. At a dedication, the parents dedicate their child to God and along with the KP community promise to raise and nurture their child in the faith as well. The child is then baptized later when the child is ready to make that choice, which can occur as part of their Confirmation.

Infant/Child Baptisms
Kaw Prairie was born out of traditions that celebrate infant and child baptisms. When we baptize infants and children we bear witness to God’s love and claim upon us that exists before we can even understand it. At a child or infant baptism the parents make a profession of faith on their child’s behalf and promise, along with the child’s sponsors and the whole KP community, to raise and nurture their child in the faith. Then at Confirmation, the child will have the chance to confirm those baptismal promises that were made on their behalf before they were able to make them themselves.

Child, Student, and Adult Baptisms
When we baptize children, youth and adults we are reminded that at our baptisms we make the choice to become a follower of Jesus and promise to seek to grow in our life of faith and service to God. We receive the love and grace of God and choose to live our lives in response to it. We practice immersion baptism at Kaw Prairie so that the baptized can feel the grace of God truly cover them as they then emerge into the new life God has for them.
